Oppenheimer Review

In typical Christopher Nolan fashion, Oppenheimer debuted with acclaim and box office triumph. It has grossed over $400 million in ten days and is expected to dominate this year’s award show circuit.

It’s no surprise the movie performed this well financially. Nolan is the western world’s premier director of at least the past 15 years, and the cast is prodigious. Couple those with the “Barbenheimer” social-media marketing trend is a slam dunk payday for Universal Pictures.

Perhaps unexpected was the humility of the cast. I’m not talking about Cillian Murphy responding to the immense praise heaped upon him by crediting Nolan and his fellow actors. I’m talking about Gary Oldman taking a role in the movie where he is in one scene for, like, three minutes. I’m talking about Emmy-and-Academy-Award-winning Rami Malek showing up for “one day of filming,” as Nolan said in an interview, to appear in two scenes.

Between the humble castings and the renowned talent of Nolan and the cast, the expectations were rightfully sky-high.

Still, I had the slightest bit of doubt in my mind.

How is Nolan going to make us believe in consequences for things we know the results for and truly build tension for an event that everyone who has taken a US History class knows the outcome?

Well, I won’t spoil it for you.

I will say that the scene depicting the Trinity test put my doubts to rest.

Find a day where you have enough time to see this three-hour thriller. Find yourself in a packed theater where, like everyone else present, you forget that you know how it’s going to turn out.

See for yourself.
