Monday– The Braves optioned Jared Shuster to AAA today, following his start yesterday.
This was always the plan, as Dylan Dodd was announced to be a part of the MLB rotation but was not added to the opening day roster. The lefty will debut against the Cardinals tomorrow night.
This move allows the Braves to keep their bullpen depth, including long relief option Michael Tonkin and the versatile Jesse Chavez. Both pitchers held the Nationals scoreless in their appearances yesterday.
Shuster will probably be back on the MLB roster in time for his next start, but the next Braves pitcher to be called up will probably be Bryce Elder to fill in for the injured Max Fried.
Ian Anderson, the other candidate to replace Fried, did not make it through the first inning of his AAA start on Sunday. Anderson, who notably pitched five no-hit innings in the 2021 World Series, ceded three homeruns and five runs in 2/3 innings pitched.
This is the first of many roster moves of this kind for the Braves in 2023. Look for at least two more corresponding moves regarding the rotation until Max Fried comes back.
